Choosing between the filing possibilities needs a strategic approach. There are significant differences between the Hungarian national design and the EU registered design (RCD) system. One important difference is that the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) does not carry out a substantive examination, however the HIPO (Hungarian Intellectual Property Office) does. Consequently, RCDs are easier to obtain, however, they are deemed to be less strong compared to Hungarian national designs.

During the strategic planning the applicant shall take into account the geographical locations where the design protected product is to be sold and also the purpose of the design protection.
